Battle Angel Alita -
Manga, Comics, Graphic Novels and more!
Battle Angel Alita (know as Gunnm in Japan), is a manga (Japanese graphic novels) series which was written and drawn by Yukito Kishiro. The manga series consists of the first main story which is nine separate books. The series is then continued in Battle Angel Alita: Last Order. Last Order was nine books as well but just recently there have been additional books added, so there are a total of twelve in the second series now. Two of the books were also turned into Anime direct to video releases. In 2011, James Cameron's film adaptation of the manga series will come out in theaters.

In the US the manga volumes are published by VIZ Media. Thankfully they have chosen to preserve the original vision of the creator by keeping the novels in a RIGHT to LEFT reading fashion the way they are read in Japan. This is important because it preserves the original orientation of the creators artwork. If you haven't read anything this way it may take a little while to get used to but you'll be reading fast before you know it.

Battle Angel Alita - The Story

The story opens with Ido Daisuke, part time hunter-warrior, part time humble repairman, clawing through heaps of technological junk for robot parts. Unexpectedly, he finds the head and torso of a pretty cyborg and sets out to reconstruct her. After some work collecting what he needs, Alita (named for his deceased cat) is up, about and in trouble. Alita, it turns out, has surprising fighting skills, and sets out to become a hunter-warrior herself. The second half of the manga tells the story of Alita's first major conflict - with Makaku, another cyborg who is essentially a big head and a tail (except when he is 'obtaining' what other parts he pleases).

All of this takes place in the ground level (and sewer) of a Bladerunner type of lower city called the Scrap Yard. It is the industrial plant and waste land for Tiphares, the magical city in the clouds where jury-built cyborgs never get to go. Most residents are at least a portion artificial and many are like Alita, a brain and central nervous system inside a mechanical contrivance. Despite all this dehumanization, Alita manages to be more than a machine operator. Somehow, her ethics and humanity have survived the fall to make this manga series much more than a choreographed hack and disassemble story. This is a graphic novel with amazing artistic and narrative values.

Battle Angel Trailer with Dany Verissimo

It seems that the Salto Brothers put together a demo teaser trailer with Dany Verissimo just for fun. For those of you that don't know who Dany is, she is a beautiful French actress who starred in the 2004 film "Banlieue 13" which was know in the States as "District B13". The movie has some amazing parkour action scenes. Dany also had a brief career as an adult film actress. This trailer has been slightly censored due to some brief nudity (applogies to the creators). If you go to Dany's MySpace page you can see the original version. The trailer is done very well although I'm not sure why they say at the end "...if it's OK with you, I'll call you Gally"? To be consistant it would either be Alita or Gally all the way through. If the movie is Battle Angel Alita you wouldn't use Gally. Either way, if the movie was going to be a live action movie, which by all information it won't be, Dany would be a pretty good fit looks and body wise to play Alita. And the Salto Brothers did a really nice job on this trailer considering they didn't really have any content to work with on it. If you're not familiar with the story the trailer may seem a little lacking, though as it doesn't really explain much.

The trailer is a Quicktime movie. If you don't have the latest version of Quicktime you can download it for free from Apples website. (return to the top)

Battle Angel Alita's Damascus Blade

In the manga, the Damascus Blades were created by the finest blade makers. There was a beautiful pattern the surface caused by the mixing of various metals of different hardness. It was ironic that the blades were made using scrap metal. The strongest steel in all of the universe and it could only be made in the SCRAPYARD! There are some great pictures of Alita using the blades in Vol. 3 - Killing Angel.

Have a look at these great photographs by Allison Rose of Pixelette Photography. They show Riki (the model) in costume with the blade. That's one great costume and makeup job! The photographs are copyright (c) Allison Rose. Used with permission.

James Cameron's Battle Angel Movie

James Cameron is working on a movie version of Battle Angel Alita due out some time in 2011. He is slated to direct and write the movie based off of Yukito Kishiro's graphic novels. Right now, Laeta Kalogridis, is slated to write the screenplay. Laeta wrote a few episodes of the new Bionic Woman series as well as the 2009 movie 'Shutter Island'. The creative work seems to be in great hands with Martin Laing coming on board as the Production Designer and James Clyne, Feng Zhu and Mark Goerner working as concept artists. Laing worked with Cameron on 'Ghosts of the Abyss' as well as worked on 'Terminator Salvation', 'City of Ember' and 2010's 'Clash of the Titans'. Clyne has done some amazing work on many films, 'Minority Report', 'War of the Worlds', 'X-Men Last Stand', 'Transformers' and the new 'Star Trek' to name a few. Goerner who also worked on 'Minority Report' is a super talented concept artist as well.

MarketSaw interviewed Mark Goerner in October of 2008 and they spoke about the Alita project a bit. Here are some snips from the interview. Visit their page for the full interview!

With Battle Angel, there was an underlying consensus from our small crew that Alita needed to retain her inherent style and subtle personality as well as that of most of the secondary characters. Key sets and technology represented in the architecture and robotics were also seen as essential. - Mark Goerner

It turned out to be a bit of an art buffet with tasks being kicked around. James started a week before I did, jumping immediately into Alita's form and outfits. I initially worked on some of the grand scheme city designs, and then as a few months went by, dove into everything under that world's dreary sun. Seeing as James is my best pal, and one of my biggest heroes, I hope you get a chance to hit him up for further details. Feng was on shortly, and in my opinion was not utilized correctly; but that happens in certain studios and offices on a regular basis. As the last one on, I got to see the whole effort and did my most favorite piece in that last week...wish you could see it. - Mark Goerner in reference to how it was working with the other artist and how they divided up the work

NDA's [non-disclosure agreements] are powerful things, so what I can say without issue, is that when they stopped funding that phase of the production, what was left on the walls and in the digital archives was a massive library of what most fan's and newcomers would see as truly powerful. Near the end of the cycle, we began to hit a consistent tone with regard to atmospheres and characterizations that followed or even amplified on Kishiro's vision. - Mark Goerner in response to being asked about the most exciting thing about working on the project

Possible Movie Teaser Poster Leak?

Here is a possible Battle Angel Movie Poster Teaser that's been floating around on the internet. Is it real? Not really sure, but it looks pretty nice. If it is real it definitely solidifies that possibility that the movie will really be released. If it's a fan made poster then at least they have the 20th Century-Fox and the James Cameron info correct.

It would be great to start to see some actual concept art or photo stills from the production if it really is underway. Seeing some concept artwork would at least give us some idea of how they intend on transferring Yukito Kishiro's amazing visions into the film world...
